In certain instances flashing may need to be installed on the exterior of siding.
Installing kickout flashing on existing roof with stucco siding.
Install roofing felt or synthetic roofing underlayment over the roof running it up the wall at least as high as where the top of the step flashing will be 3.
Cover with cap flashing.
Install shingles over the portion of step flashing on the roof.
Typically made of aluminium or galvanized steel flashing is any material used over joints in your walls or roof to prevent water from seeping through.
The job shown at left is typical for a reroof where we cut in and begin detailing the intersections first.
If the kick out and step flashing can t tuck behind the siding screw on cap flashing to cover it then caulk along the top.
This flashing is angled to divert the roof run off water away from the roof and side wall joint point.
Trim the housewrap piece around the wing of the kickout flashing and along the roof line.
However in most instances step flashing should be installed behind siding.
In this example the kickout is installed with a stucco sided home but kickouts are needed with any vertical wall cladding type siding brick etc.
Applying flashing to a stucco roof or walls requires both cement and nails as well as caulk or more stucco to create a water tight seal.
It is always recommended to install step flashing behind stucco dryvit wood panel lap siding vinyl siding cedar shingle siding etc.
Install roof felt prior to installing the step and kick out flashing.
The image here shows the kickout flashing circled by yellow.
Nail it to the sidewall or glue it if nailing isn t possible.
Lift the bottom shingle and slip in the kickout flashing.
Install house siding over the step flashing ending at least one inch above the roof surface.
We usually begin by installing a piece of peel and stick flashing folding it into the corner between the roof and the wall.
Since the kickout wall leg is applied over the housewrap beneath any water that may leak by the cut will be redirected out onto the siding surface through the lap you placed the 2 ft x 3 ft piece of housewrap over.
When installing metal or rubber membrane roofs use continuous flashing rather than pieces of step flashing.
Next install a starter strip of roofing then use the kickout flashing in place of the first piece of step flashing.
