Over time the flashing around plumbing vents can rust or deteriorate and it will need to be replaced.

Next place your vent flashing on top of the membrane.
Carefully remove all the shingles from the flashing.
Apply a thin bead of silicone around the opening of the vent pipe area and lay the membrane in place.
Apply the roofing felt on the roof cutting a hole for the vent pipe.
Use one roofing nail in each corner of the flashing to secure it to the roof.
Apply the last row of shingles that is just below the vent pipe as shown in figure 1.
Center the pipe in the flashing and push the flexible front corners up or down so that the flashing pipe is parallel to the vent pipe.
Remove the old and clean the pipe.

Put one nail in the bottom edge with a dab of caulk under it to seal the.
Now that the old flashing is gone you can slide the new flashing over the pipe vent and maneuver it under the shingles above the pipe.
The main reason homeowners choose to install or replace the vent pipe flashing on their roof is to stop or prevent leaks which may also help extend the lifespan of the roof.
